Mandate 6: Standardized Device OS & IoT Flow

All future Trimble embedded systems and devices must adopt the Trimble Bedrock OS Framework and standardized IoT flow.

  • Connectivity is native, ensuring all next-generation field devices are connected from day one.
  • Security and updates are managed through a single, hardened framework rather than fragmented OS versions.
  • Data capture is standardized at the source, making field data actionable in the cloud.
  • Maintenance overhead is reduced for hardware teams by leveraging shared, enterprise-level Core Services.
  • Adopt and contribute to Trimble Bedrock for all go-forward embedded Linux development.
  • Use the Platform IoT gateway for all MQTT-based device comms, including device telemetry.
  • For devices with a secure enclave, ensure the devices carry TID certificates and are registered with the Platform IAM system.
  1. Adopt Trimble Bedrock OS Framework for embedded standardization
    1. Using a Linux-based OS for embedded systems (mobile apps excluded): 1 Point
    2. Using the Yocto Project for embedded Linux development: 1 Point
    3. Directly using and contributing to Trimble Bedrock: 2 Points
  2. Platform Integration
    1. For devices with secure elements, have TID certificates been loaded onto the device and provisioned in IAM?: 2 Point
    2. Use of the Platform IoT gateway for all MQTT comms: 1 Point
  • Engage in the community: Join the Embedded Linux Guild.

  • Plan for Bedrock adoption and contributions.

    • If your team does not yet use The Yocto Project for embedded Linux development, become familiar with the framework’s structure and philosophy. Make a migration plan from legacy build systems (e.g., buildroot).
    • Review and plan for direct contributions to Trimble Bedrock, Trimble’s official Yocto-based OS.
  • Platform Integration

  • As of Q4 2026:

    • Projects in T1 or T2 of the T5 process: plan for Yocto and Bedrock onboarding.
    • Projects in T3: adopt with leadership discretion.
    • Projects in T4+ exempt.
